Shabbat & Weekday Services

Questioning, discussing, analyzing, interpreting and arguing with God and with each other (respectfully) lie at the heart of the Jewish religion and we embrace that tradition during our Friday night and Saturday Shabbat services. Saturday services include a discussion of a part of Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) and a group discussion on points of interest in the Torah, initiated by a provocative sermon by our Rabbi. Services are filled with music and always include a surprise Adon Olam. The service concludes with HaTikvah and America, which is followed with a special Oneg Shabbat on Fridays and a Kiddush on Saturdays.

(mourner’s prayer).

A piece of our history…
At the start of World War II, at the request of President Roosevelt, Rabbi Alter Kriegel decreed that the congregation would conclude all religious services with the singing of “America” until all of our members returned home from the war.

Pvt. Max Novick was the first World War II casualty from the members of the JCC of Verona. He received the Purple Heart for his heroism. Because he and others did not return, we continued to honor the promise of concluding all religious services with the singing of “America”.
