Museum

It is the purpose of the Lilyan Dretel Museum and Resource Center to create a record of the past through the display of memorabilia, and to encourage a continuous interest in the future of Congregation Beth Ahm, its Children's Learning Center, and Judaism. The Museum is dedicated to remembering the past, enjoying the present, and looking to the future.

Be sure to spend some time exploring the museum next time you are at Beth Ahm. Donations to support the work of the Lilyan Dretel Museum can be sent to the Synagogue office.

About My Friend Lil

By Ruth Ness

This is probably the most difficult article I have ever written and yet the most meaningful. Lil Dretel was a very dear and loyal friend.

We go back a long way. When our children were very small we spent a few summers together at Sunnyfield Swim Club in Caldwell. Our paths crossed many times over the years and our friendship remained steady. However, after Joel, her beloved husband passed away I was able to help her over some of the rough spots and we realized we had a lot in common and became close friends.

We spoke on the phone almost every day. Her hello to me was “tis I” with a lilt in her voice that was always cheerful. We talked for an hour at a time with subjects ranging from the state of our health to ways to enhance our synagogue. We worked on many committees together. The two major ones were Project Return (a huge success) and Synagogue Beautification. Working with Lil was always a pleasure. No matter what we worked on, she was a true professional. Her suggestions and total commitment to the project at hand always made it a success.
Most often when Lil and I sat together at Services we would whipsper our thoughts on how to enhance the Bimah. Some of our ideas were to adjust the Ner Tamid, improve the flower arrangements, and raise the Torahs so that when the Ark was open it can be seen from all positions in the sanctuary. Lil was a major part of the Beth Ahm Beautification Committee and was instrumental in getting an excellent craftsman who was able to make our ideas come to life.

One of our major projects was the front door to Beth Ahm. We worked many hours choosing wood trim, moldings, and paint colors to make the entrance more appealing.
What a fitting tribute to my dear friend Lil when the funeral procession paused in front of the synagogue, in front of the door on which she had worked to creat. She earned that tribute. She was a first class lady and I am all the better for having had her as a dear friend. “tis I, Lil.”

**This museum is dedicated to the memory of Lil Dretel**
