Our Rabbi's Message

P'Kudei

These last chapters of Exodus have been involved with the building of the Tabernacle. All was explained in detail. Nothing was omitted. We are taught about the Tent itself and about the Menorah and about the Altar. We learn about the materials used to build the Tabernacle, and we learn about the jobs of different people and different tribes. We are taught who the leaders of the different projects were.

Finally the Mishkan is completed. In the last paragraph of the book, God, or at least a cloud ordained by God, enters the Mishkan. And God's presence remains with the people Israel during the remainder of the forty years that they are in the desert on the way to the Promised Land.

The people had to prepare for God's presence or He would not have been with them. The Kotsker Rebbe once was asked: "Where is God?" He answered: "Wherever people let Him in!" The Kotsker understood the lesson of this portion. God does not just appear. He is not evident to those who do not seek Him. Where is God? Wherever we open the door for Him; wherever we build a Sanctuary for Him; wherever we act kindly and do justly. The reality of God is a consequence of good living. No one is promised health or wealth or even good luck. All of us, however, have the opportunity to find God Who makes living in this difficult world always a blessing.
